Skyline has released a new white paper, Repowering Solar to Unlock Long‑Term Value, outlining a $68MM portfolio‑wide solar repowering initiative launched at a pivotal moment for Ontario’s electricity system. With the province forecasting a 65% surge in electricity demand by 2050,1 upgrading existing solar infrastructure has become critical to strengthening grid capacity and increasing renewable energy output.

The repowering project will upgrade 19 solar assets representing over 70% kW DC of Skyline Clean Energy Fund’s existing portfolio, expanding total system size and increasing electricity generation to maximize future revenue and long‑term value for investors.

“Repowering our solar assets ensures Skyline Clean Energy Fund is strategically positioned to support the shift to renewable energy generation and increased electricity demand,” said Rob Stein, President of Skyline Clean Energy Fund. “The results that we are already seeing and that we are anticipating post-completion will enhance generation performance and strengthen long-term value for our Fund investors, fulfilling our mandate today and securing it for tomorrow.”

The white paper describes the strategy behind selecting the solar assets that have been tapped for repowering, the mitigation of supply chain and contractual risks, and the anticipated increase in energy generation and value for investors.

Key takeaways from the white paper

  • The 19 solar assets selected for repowering represent over 70% of overall electricity generation in the portfolio
  • Electricity generation capacity is expected to increase by 41MW, enough to power 6,000-8,000 homes annually
  • $19.5MM in expected value-add from completion of the repowering initiative
  • Projected internal rates of return (IRRs) will range between 13% and 36%
  • Unit value increase for investors will potentially rise by $1.15 per unit
  • Six assets have been successfully repowered and are back online at their new, increased capacity

The repowering project kicked off in 2025 and is projected to be completed by Q1 2028. Case studies highlighting the early success of the repowering work are presented in the white paper.

“This significant re-investment into Skyline Clean Energy Fund represents our commitment to the future of renewable energy investment and our place in it,” Jason Castellan, Co-Founder and CEO, Skyline, said. “The repowering of the solar assets held in this growth-oriented fund will help secure the potential long-term earnings and value for our investors, positioning the Fund as a strategic diversifying addition to portfolios, anchored in real, value-producing assets.”
