[Guelph, Ontario – June 26, 2024]

On Wednesday, June 26, 2024, project partners, government representatives, and community members cut the ribbon on a new 32-unit Permanent Supportive Housing building in Guelph, Ontario.

The new apartments at 10 Shelldale Crescent will house members of the Guelph community who have experienced chronic homelessness.

The building provides 32 independent units and common spaces, with 24/7 access to staff member support in the building as well as other services that meet residents’ needs. It will be managed by Kindle Communities with support from the Guelph Community Health Centre and Stonehenge Therapeutic Community.

Multiple business units within Skyline Group of Companies have provided ongoing expertise and resources to bring the project to completion. Skyline Apartment REIT proudly donated the land for the development, while SkyDev provided development oversight from beginning to completion.

Permanent Supportive Housing is an evidence-based and cost-effective solution for people who are chronically homeless because of long-term disabilities.

10 Shelldale Crescent is one of three projects within the local Home for Good campaign, launched in Spring 2022 by the Guelph-Wellington Poverty Elimination Task Force, Guelph Community Foundation, and United Way Guelph-Wellington-Dufferin. Its other two projects are Bellevue Support Housing and Grace Gardens, which opened in May and July 2023, respectively.

“At Kindle Communities, we are committed to ending homelessness,” said Daria Allan-Ebron, CEO, Kindle Communities. “This vision is shared by our community and with our incredible partners. With unwavering support from the private sector, all levels of government, and our community, we are more than just hopeful – we are determined.  10 Shelldale is a testament to our collective effort, and we are thrilled to provide permanent supportive housing to those in need.”

“Skyline has been in the rental housing business for 25 years, and we have seen first-hand just how fundamental safe, secure, long-term housing can be to an individual’s well-being,” said R. Jason Ashdown, Co-Founder and Chief Sustainability Officer, Skyline Group of Companies. “It is our hope that the 10 Shelldale Crescent project can serve as an example for other communities to emulate, showing that effective collaboration among government, business, and community organizations can play a key role in solving housing insecurity not just in Ontario, but across Canada.”

“As the Member of Parliament for Guelph, I was pleased to bring the Prime Minister to Guelph to showcase the collaborative success of the Kindle Communities project supported by the co-investment fund through CMHC,” said Lloyd Longfield, MP for Guelph. “Guelph is a community that has rallied to ensure we end homelessness and has garnered the support of a wide range of private partnerships, organizations, and all levels of government. As a result of projects like this, Guelph-Wellington has significantly reduced chronic homelessness. Thanks to Kindle, Skyline, CMHA and all the community partners for making a real difference in people’s lives by giving them a place to call home.”

“Through our government’s 2024 Budget, we are continuing to make bold, innovative changes to support our most vulnerable with more access to safe, supportive housing and mental health and addictions services here in communities across the province,” said Hon. Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, Ontario. “Our investments will break down barriers to make it easier and faster for people in Guelph-Wellington to access supportive housing and community-based mental health and addiction support services close to home.”

“Our government is investing over $3 million to build 16 supportive housing units in Guelph,” said Hon. Vijay Thanigasalam, Associate Minister of Housing, Ontario. “These units will help those experiencing homelessness improve their quality of life while strengthening the community.”

“The County of Wellington is steadfast in its commitment to ending homelessness in Wellington-Guelph,” said Andy Lennox, Warden, County of Wellington. “We are profoundly grateful to our partners at the federal, provincial, and local levels for their collaboration in bringing to fruition the 32 units of supportive housing at 10 Shelldale. This critical project represents a beacon of hope for individuals facing housing insecurity or homelessness in our community.”

“This amazing, 32-unit development is a big step forward in addressing homelessness in our community,” said Mayor of Guelph, Cam Guthrie. “10 Shelldale Crescent shows that when we work together—private businesses, all levels of government, the non-profit sector, and the public—we can collaborate to create a home with wrap-around support for people experiencing housing insecurity.”

“I’m so proud of how our community came together to build housing with health supports to provide a home for our most vulnerable neighbours,” said Mike Schreiner, MPP for Guelph. “I want to thank the government for funding this project, which will make a positive difference in Guelph.”

“The Home for Good Campaign would like to thank the over 250 individuals and organizations that contributed financially to bring permanent supportive housing to Guelph,” said Glenna Banda and Chris Willard with the Home for Good Campaign. “You should be very proud today. Your gifts not only went directly to building costs, your commitment helped unlock other funding sources. You played an important role in 32 people soon having a place to call home. We’ve proven we are a community that is rich in empathy and that believes everyone deserves a place to call home.”

“As organizations that work with under-served communities, The Guelph Community Health Centre and Stonehenge Therapeutic Community co-designed a new approach to put housing, health care and supports into a single program,” said Kristin Kerr, CEO, Stonehenge Therapeutic Community. “We know that housing is health care, and we are grateful for the $9 million in operational funding from the Ministry of Health to help under-served community members gain stability, better health and wellness.”

The “Shelldale partnership” among Kindle Communities, Skyline, Guelph Community Health Centre, and Stonehenge Therapeutic Community was recently awarded Non-Profit Organization of the Year for 2024 at the Guelph Chamber of Commerce Awards of Excellence.

As a rental housing provider for more than 35,000 individuals across Canada, Skyline will continue to work with government and community organizations to find long-term, effective solutions to the housing crisis.

10 Shelldale Crescent stands as an example of effective partnership among a rental housing provider, government, and community. Skyline is committed to maintaining these strong partnerships in an effort to positively influence housing policy for the benefit of all stakeholders.
